Objective To study the somatotype of Han in urban areas of Shanxi province. Methods The somatotype of 303 urban adults (150males and 153 females) of Han in county of Shanxi province is studied using the Heath-Carter somatotyping method. Results The mean somatotype values of the male and female were 4.9-5.8-1.8 and 6.0-6.0-1.2 in city districts respectively, which represented the endomorphic mesomorph category in the male and endomorphmesomorph category in the female. The tops of Somatotypes frequency were endomorphic mesomorph category, endomorphmesomorph category and mesomorph endomorphic category. Compared with distribution phase somatotype of male, the female’s distribution phase somatotype was more concentrate. Urban males endomorphy reached the highest value in 40 to 49 age group, mesmorphy reached the highest value in 30 to 39 age group, ectomorphy reached the highest value in 20 to 29 age group.City females the of Endomorph and Mesomorph increased with age,reached the highest value in over 60 age group, Ectomorph reached the highest value in 20 to 29 age group. The somatotype of urban males was close to those of Uzbek, Ewenki, Canadian and Eskimos,far away from Zhuang,Mulao,Dong,Nu.
